What is the difference between judo and ju jitsu?
My 7 year old daughter wants to go to a karate class. i was just wondering which would suit her best?
Thanks in advance!
maybe it's tak wan do(prob spelt wrong). obviously i know very little about this subject, which is the reason for my question in the first place!
Judo and Jiujitsu are closely related as has been stated already. Judo just favors the standup, throwing techniques and does some work on ground submission/breaks for finishers. Jiujitsu is less involved in the actual throwing (though some is covered) and focuses heavily on the grappling techniques. Its just a matter of emphasis.
Tai Kwon Do is the national sport of Korea and is developed heavily around various kicking techniques.
Karate is a Japanese art which has some conflict to actual history but most subscribe that it was filtered through to Japan from Okinawa. Either way, its got a variety of techniques with punches, kicks and some standing joint lock techniques.
In my opinion, at her age I would get her into either a kids karate or TKD class. They just tend to have the better kids setup. There are some Judo for kids out there though as well. I would be hesitant on Jiujitsu with all the joint stuff they do. Its not that its unsafe, its very safe when done correctly. But that takes responsibility and control on both parties and kids just aren't there yet.
Additionally, there are benefits in TKD and Judo. Olympic rules (in either) are standardized across the board. So, if your child were to take TKD or Judo now and move later. You should be able to find another dojo and your daughter would for the most part be able to fit right in and pick back up where she left off. Standardization is worth gold, after moving as much as I had to in the military. Starting over in a new art everywhere you go can be frustrating.
