How well do rifle butt pads work?
I was looking at some rifle but pads that are meant to reduce kick, how well do they really work?
The Limb Saver and similar replacement butt pads are softer materials and have a different rebound than the more common Rubber or rubber foam types. The pads have more deformation and that actually spreads the recoil across a wider portion of the shoulder and the actual compression and rebound produces "work" so the energy absorbed by the pad is released as heat. Not that it would ever be noticed--just part of Thermodynamic Law. Same reason a steel ball will bounce off a hard surface higher than a rubber ball of the same mass, the compression changes the kinetic energy to heat.
So the principle is very sound, and they do make a slight difference, so that a 300 Win Mag is still going to feel like a 30-06 or maybe a 308.
