How come kickers can kick the ball 70 yards for a touch back, but a 50+ yard field goal is so difficult?
I understand that with field goals there is a holder and the kicker has to kick it over the line, but does that make such a big difference? Kickers are fairly accurate on kick offs and are able to get the ball within 10 yards of their intended target. I just don't understand why teams punt when they are on the 45.
A kicker only gets three steps on a FG because the defense is coming in. On a kickoff, he gets a running start.
