Taking in a pair of jeans?

Can you alter jeans? like i just bought a pair of jeans they fit great now but i plan on losing anywhere between 10 and 20 lbs... so they wont fit. they are very expensive jeans "7's" and so i dont want them to go to waste just sitting till i get fat again. is it possible to take the waist in like you would for a pair of dress paints?
you cant return them after a few months.... plus why would i return a pair of 7's
