Is it better to do weight lifting immediately before martial arts training or some other time?
I have a lot of time at my disposal, but I'd rather train BJJ from Mon to Sat, with Sunday being an off day. I'm doing Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. Should I do this (or any) routine immediately before martial arts or some other time?
You should never lift weights immediately before doing martial arts. Most weight routines contract the muscles, making them shorter along with lactic acid build up and stiffness and soreness especially at the joints and insertion points. In martial arts you are doing a lot of extension type movement along with putting a lot of stress on the areas that can least accommodate it which is the joint and muscles at the insertion point. It is better to have at least a few if not several hours of rest in between or do your strength training after martial arts. You will more easily avoid pulls, strains and tears if you have adequate rest and/or do weights afterwords.
