My Xbox 360 power supply has a red light?
The power supply is out of the box new. I just set it up a few minutes ago. What's the problem? The one I bought is not directly from Microsoft, and it's plugged into a surge protector. Are any of those things part of the problem?
The Xbox 360 is not the problem. It is the power brick with a red light.
If the brick is from another company and not Microsoft, then there can be a few problems. First off, if your XBox is new, they changed the power needs for the system to an off-number in voltage... slightly LOWER than the average 12 Volt brick (I think it's like 11.8v or something like that). This causes the problem that the third-party brick can't feed the correct power to the system and it's getting feedback.
If it's an older system, it's also possible that your brick is just not compatible with the system... but the big deal is this... Microsoft doesn't support third-party power bricks (as the power brick is covered by the three year warranty on the system). So any brick you have bought may not have the exact push it needs anymore, solely because Microsoft doesn't want it to.
Basically, if you want a guaranteed way to power the system, don't go third-party. Besides, if you got the MadCatz brick, you might want to keep it away from carpets or anything flammable... they've been known to spark out after long periods of time.
