How do you make internet powerline adapters work?
I have the XAVB101 and my pc isn't picking it up. It will pick it up if I have my linksys wireless card connected as the pc can acess the internet with wireless linksys. However, as soon as I unplug it and try to connect with the powerline adapter, the configuration utility I installed with the resource cd can no longer pick up the devices. I would install the new firmware, but I think I remember like an 80% fail rate installing firmware wirelessly. It should be able to work without the new firmware anyway. It isn't like it isn't compatible with linksys routers or anything because it does work on my ps3. I'm getting a solid green light for data transfer, which means there is no data transfer and an orange light for internet connection, signalling 50 - 80 mbps. And yes, I did this directly through the outlet, not through a surge protector or power strip.
What do I have to do to make it work?
First of all, powerline adapters are evil because they create a large amount of electromagnetic smog. The frequencies they use are also used in other forms of communication and they have the capacity to disrupt emergency services. Don't use them.
But since you already have one, please try the following:
* Both ends of the powerline connection should be connected to the same circuit. A circuit breaker can cause problems with the connection.
* Try and plug in the powerline adapters on the same extension cord so that there are definitely no other devices in the communication path.
* If this doesn't work already, they might be either broken or there may be some channel setting that you can tweak so that both ends find each other.
* The powerline adapters should be used like you would use a regular Ethernet cable. One end needs to terminate at your computer's network card, the other end needs to terminate at you router. I didn't pick up from your description whether this really is the case.
* Try to replace the powerline adapters with a regular Ethernet cable and see if it works then. If it does work, the powerline adapters have some kind of problem.
In essence, you need to make sure that the powerline adapters are working properly, that there are no devices between them that might interfere with their functionality, and that the settings of both ends of the powerline adapters match.
But why would you use powerline adapters in the first place if you already have a wireless LAN?
