Did the ancient greeks eat sheep testicles in order to improve strength/fitness?
I've read several times that the greek ingested sheep testosterone though consumption of the testicles. Is there evidence to back this claim up?
In other words, did the greek have an equivalent of steroids.
Well, I don't know about ancient greeks, but modern greeks use to eat young sheep testicles. They call this meal "ameletita" and they it not to improve strength/fitness but as a "meze"(=snack) accompanying the wine.
What I also know, is that all kinds of proteins, even the hormones, are destroyed when meat is cooked. So, even if they ate them, they couldn't help them as steroids. I've read though, that the ancient greek athletes ate dried figs to improve their strength before the games, which contain high percentages of carbohydrates (energy).
