How to remove ink stains from a tote bag?

I have a white tote bag with blue & black ink stains, how can i get them off without messing the tote bag up?
The ink stain has been there for a while

As you will find listed on the internet - an alcohol based hairspray will do the trick - spray it on and dabb at it then use a soapy water solution to clean away. Amway LOC is excellent too.
