Is playing basketball and lifting weights on "easy" training days bad for marathon training?
I have been playing basketball and lifting weight(full-body) on my "easy" workout days while training for a marathon. Should I take it easy and only run on these days or is it ok as long as injuries are not a problem?
This is an interesting question because marathon runners usually aren't basketball players. Basketball requires fast twitch muscles for jumping. Because marathoner runners spend their time training their slow twitch endurance muscles, they usually can't jump well.
How long and how hard are you playing basketball? An hour of basketball can be a hard workout. There is a lot of sprinting up and down the court. If you're able to recover with the basketball workout then sure. If the basketball makes you tired for your running training then it's not really recovery. Lifting weights should not be a problem.
